Keeping your Enshrouded server updated is essential for accessing the latest content, gameplay improvements, and bug fixes. Running an outdated server can also prevent players from connecting, especially after major game updates such as Enshrouded 1.0.

Fortunately, updating an Enshrouded dedicated server is relatively straightforward. Whether you're self-hosting using SteamCMD or renting a server through Pine Hosting, you can update your server without losing your existing world.

This guide covers both methods, including how to back up your files and verify that your server is running the latest version.

What To Do Before Updating Your Enshrouded Server

Before installing an Enshrouded update, you should always create a backup of your server files.

While updates generally preserve existing worlds, major releases can introduce changes that affect world data, progression, or server configurations.

For self-hosted servers, you'll want to back up:

  • Your savegame folder containing your world files.
  • Your enshrouded_server.json configuration file.
  • Any additional custom files or configurations.

Make sure your server is completely stopped before copying these files.

If you're using Pine Hosting, you can create backups directly through our game panel without manually downloading your server files.

Once your backup is complete, you can safely proceed with the update.

How To Update A Self-Hosted Enshrouded Server

If you're running an Enshrouded dedicated server on your own Windows computer or VPS, the easiest way to update it is through SteamCMD.

SteamCMD is Valve's command-line utility for downloading, installing, and updating dedicated game servers.

Step 1: Stop Your Enshrouded Server

Before updating, make sure everyone has disconnected from your server.

Close the dedicated server application and wait for the process to stop completely.

You should never update your server while it's running, as doing so can interfere with files currently being used.

Step 2: Open SteamCMD

Locate your SteamCMD installation and open Windows Command Prompt.

If you've previously installed your Enshrouded server using SteamCMD, you can use the same installation to update it.

You'll also need to know the location of your existing server files.

For example:

C:\EnshroudedServer

Your installation directory should contain enshrouded_server.exe alongside the other dedicated server files.

Step 3: Update Your Enshrouded Server Using SteamCMD

Once you've located your installation, execute the following command from Command Prompt, replacing the example directory with your actual installation path:

steamcmd.exe +force_install_dir "C:\EnshroudedServer" +login anonymous +app_update 2278520 validate +quit

This command tells SteamCMD to:

  1. Locate your existing Enshrouded server installation.
  2. Log into Steam anonymously.
  3. Download the latest dedicated server files.
  4. Validate the installation to check for missing or corrupted files.
  5. Close SteamCMD once the process finishes.

The number 2278520 is the Steam App ID for the Enshrouded Dedicated Server.

It's important not to confuse this with the main Enshrouded game's App ID, which is 1203620.

If you're already inside SteamCMD and have selected the correct installation directory, you can simply run:

app_update 2278520 validate

Wait for SteamCMD to complete the update before continuing.

Step 4: Restart Your Enshrouded Server

Once the update finishes, navigate to your server installation directory.

Launch:

enshrouded_server.exe

Wait for the server to finish starting, then check the console for any errors.

You should now be able to connect using the latest compatible version of Enshrouded.

Your existing world and configuration should remain intact as long as you've updated the correct installation directory.

How To Update An Enshrouded Server Through Steam

If you installed the Enshrouded Dedicated Server through Steam rather than SteamCMD, you can update it directly from your Steam library.

Follow these steps:

  1. Launch Steam on your computer.
  2. Navigate to your Library.
  3. Enable the Tools filter if necessary.
  4. Find Enshrouded Dedicated Server.
  5. Check whether an update is available.
  6. Download and install the update.
  7. Restart your dedicated server.

Steam normally handles updates for applications installed through its library, so you won't need to enter SteamCMD commands manually.

Remember to stop your dedicated server and back up your world before updating.

  3. Wait for your server to finish restarting.

How To Check If Your Enshrouded Server Updated Successfully

After updating your server, it's worth checking that everything is working correctly.

Start by checking your server console for errors and confirming that your world has loaded successfully.

Next, launch Enshrouded and attempt to connect to your server.

If you can connect successfully and your existing world loads normally, the update has likely completed correctly.

You should also verify that your server settings haven't changed.

If you need to adjust anything, our guide on how to change Enshrouded server settings explains how to modify your configuration files through the Pine Hosting panel.

Common Problems When Updating An Enshrouded Server

Although updating an Enshrouded dedicated server is usually straightforward, you might encounter a few issues.

Players Cannot Connect After Updating

If players receive a version mismatch error, make sure both the game client and dedicated server are updated to compatible versions.

For self-hosted servers, try running the SteamCMD update command again.

If you're using Pine Hosting, restart your server to check for any available updates.

Your Enshrouded Server Won't Start

Check your server console for errors.

If you're self-hosting, running the SteamCMD update command with validate can help repair missing or corrupted installation files.

You should also check your server configuration for invalid settings.

Your Existing World Is Missing

If your world doesn't appear after updating, verify that your server is using the correct save directory.

Don't immediately create a replacement world.

Instead, check whether your original save files are still available and restore your backup if necessary.
