Creating an Enshrouded server for version 1.0 allows you to explore Embervale with friends in a persistent multiplayer world. You can self-host a dedicated server on your own computer or use a hosting provider to handle installation, updates, and maintenance.

This guide covers the complete self-hosting process, including SteamCMD installation, server configuration, port forwarding, and connecting players. We'll also explain how to get your Enshrouded 1.0 server running with Pine Hosting.

Enshrouded 1.0 Dedicated Server Requirements

Before installing your dedicated server, make sure your computer has sufficient hardware. Enshrouded supports up to 16 players, but server RAM requirements and CPU usage depend on the number of active players and how demanding your world becomes.

Keen Games recommends the following specifications for self-hosting:

  • Operating System: Windows 10/11 or Windows Server.
  • Processor: A 6-core CPU for smaller groups or an 8-core CPU for 16 players.
  • RAM: 16 GB of system memory.
  • Storage: At least 30 GB of free SSD space.
  • Internet: Approximately 2 Mbps upload bandwidth per active player.

These specifications apply to the machine hosting the server. If you're also playing Enshrouded on the same computer, you'll need additional resources.

How To Self-Host An Enshrouded 1.0 Server

Step 1: Download And Install SteamCMD

SteamCMD is Valve's command-line tool for installing and updating dedicated game servers.

  1. Download SteamCMD for Windows.
  2. Create a folder named C:\SteamCMD.
  3. Extract the downloaded files into that folder.
  4. Run steamcmd.exe to complete the initial installation.
  5. Close SteamCMD once it finishes downloading its files.

Next, create another folder called C:\EnshroudedServer to store your dedicated server.

Step 2: Install The Enshrouded Dedicated Server

Open Windows Command Prompt by pressing Windows + R, entering cmd, and pressing Enter.

Run the following command:

C:\SteamCMD\steamcmd.exe +force_install_dir "C:\EnshroudedServer" +login anonymous +app_update 2278520 validate +quit

This automatically downloads and installs the latest available Enshrouded Dedicated Server files.

The number 2278520 is the Steam App ID for the dedicated server, while validate checks the installation for missing or corrupted files.

Once installation finishes, your server files will be available in C:\EnshroudedServer.

Alternatively, you can install the Enshrouded Dedicated Server through the Tools section of your Steam Library.

Step 3: Configure Your Enshrouded Server

Navigate to your installation folder and run enshrouded_server.exe once.

This generates the enshrouded_server.json configuration file. Close the server, then open that file using Notepad or another text editor.

Locate and customize the following settings:

Setting Example Value Purpose
name "My Enshrouded World" Server name displayed in the browser
slotCount 8 Maximum player count (1–16)
queryPort 15637 Steam server discovery port
ip "0.0.0.0" Network binding address
gameSettingsPreset "Default" Gameplay difficulty preset

The default IP and query port should work for most setups.

You can also customize your Enshrouded server settings to change difficulty, resource availability, enemy behavior, and other gameplay features.

Save your changes without removing any required quotation marks, brackets, or commas from the JSON file.

Step 4: Configure Server Passwords

Enshrouded uses the userGroups section of enshrouded_server.json to manage passwords and permissions.

Find the Friend group and change its existing password value to something like "password": "MyPrivatePassword123".

You can also assign a different password to the Admin group for server administration. Players joining with the admin password receive additional permissions, so keep it private.

The older top-level password setting has been replaced by the user-group system for new configurations.

Step 5: Open Your Server Ports

To allow players outside your local network to connect, you'll need to configure your firewall and router.

Enshrouded commonly uses the following UDP ports:

  • 15636 — game traffic.
  • 15637 — Steam server queries.

Open PowerShell as Administrator and enter:

New-NetFirewallRule -DisplayName "Enshrouded Server UDP" -Direction Inbound -Action Allow -Protocol UDP -LocalPort 15636,15637

Next, configure port forwarding on your router:

  1. Open Command Prompt and enter ipconfig.
  2. Find your computer's local IPv4 address.
  3. Open your router's administration page.
  4. Navigate to Port Forwarding or NAT settings.
  5. Forward UDP ports 15636 and 15637 to your computer's local IPv4 address.
  6. Save your changes.

It's best to reserve that local IP address in your router so it doesn't change.

Players outside your network will use your public IPv4 address to find the server. If your internet provider uses CGNAT, you may need to request a public IPv4 address before port forwarding will work.

Step 6: Start Your Enshrouded Server

Return to C:\EnshroudedServer and launch enshrouded_server.exe.

Wait for the server to finish loading. A successful startup should display a message similar to [Session] 'HostOnline' (up)! in the console.

Your server should now be running.

To connect:

  1. Launch Enshrouded.
  2. Select Play, then Join.
  3. Enable the dedicated server filter.
  4. Search for your configured server name.
  5. Select the server and enter its password.

If your server doesn't appear, open Steam and navigate to View → Game Servers → Favorites. Click the + button and enter your public IP with the query port, such as 123.123.123.123:15637.

If your Enshrouded server isn't showing up, the most common causes include blocked ports, incorrect server filters, or incompatible game versions.

Step 7: Update And Maintain Your Server

Self-hosted servers require manual maintenance. Before updating, stop the server and back up your savegame folder and enshrouded_server.json file.

To update your server, run the same SteamCMD installation command from Step 2. SteamCMD will check for and download the latest available dedicated server files.

Restart the server after updating.

Remember that your computer must remain powered on and connected to the internet whenever you want friends to access your world.
