Rust has already had a huge 2026, but some of the year's most interesting additions may still be ahead.
The Deep Sea, modular boats, Workbench Upgrades, new player models, clans and Player Maintained Monuments have all arrived throughout the year. Now attention is shifting toward Q4, with animals, breeding, dogs, player customization, Rust Premium and more still listed on Facepunch's roadmap.
For anyone returning to the game or preparing a Rust server for future wipes, here is what has already arrived, what is still planned for 2026 and what players can expect further into 2027.
Facepunch last updated the official Rust roadmap on August 27, 2026. The roadmap represents the developer's current direction rather than a guaranteed release schedule, meaning individual features can still move or change during development.

What Has Already Released From The Rust 2026 Roadmap?

The first three quarters of 2026 have already delivered a large part of Facepunch's roadmap.
Q1 was dominated by the Naval Update, which introduced modular boats, the Deep Sea, islands, Floating City, Ghost Ships and new offshore activities. If you missed the launch, our Rust Naval Update covers the major additions in more detail.
Q2 expanded progression and combat with the Water Wheel, Mortar, Workbench Upgrades and several other additions. You can read more about the crafting and raiding changes in our Rust May 2026 update.
June then completely rebuilt Rust's player models and animations while introducing the M16A2 and new ballistic equipment. That update also laid some of the groundwork for the player customization planned for later in the year. Our Rust June 2026 Built Different update covers those changes in more detail.
Q3 brought the Clan System, Apartment Complex and major changes to several existing monuments. August's Player Maintained Monuments connected Power Plant to locations including Airfield, Water Treatment, Launch Site and Dome through new island-wide mechanics. You can catch up on those additions in our Rust Power Trip update.
September then introduced Monument Blockers, dedicated HQM nodes and group-scaled Tool Cupboard upkeep. Our Rust September 2026 update covers the latest Q3 changes.
With those updates now live, attention is moving toward Q4.
All Rust Q4 2026 Roadmap Features
The current Q4 roadmap includes:
- Rust Premium
- New animal types
- Improved animal AI
- Decorative animals
- Animal breeding
- Dogs
- Biofuel Generator
- Player customization
- Bug Reward System
- Additional improvements
The lineup can still change before each monthly update is released, but it gives us a strong idea of what Facepunch is currently focusing on for the remaining months of 2026.
New Animals And Animal Breeding In Rust

Animals appear to be one of the biggest themes of the remaining 2026 roadmap.
Facepunch has plans for new animal types, decorative animals, improved AI and a proper breeding system.
Earlier in 2026, the developers specifically mentioned cows and sheep while discussing how they want to expand Rust's ecosystem. They also discussed animal breeding, potentially creating reasons for players to keep animals around their bases rather than wildlife existing primarily as something to hunt for resources.
The technical groundwork for this is also being developed through improvements to Rust's navigation system. Facepunch has discussed allowing animals such as sheep, cows and dogs to navigate player-built structures more effectively.
Exactly how breeding, feeding, ownership or animal resources will work has not yet been fully revealed, so there is still plenty for Facepunch to show before the feature arrives.
Are Dogs Coming To Rust?
Yes. Dogs are currently listed separately on the Q4 2026 roadmap.
Facepunch has also referenced dogs while discussing the new AI navigation technology designed to improve the way animals move through player-built bases and other environments.
What we do not know yet is exactly what role dogs will have.
Facepunch has not confirmed whether dogs will be tameable companions, guard animals, part of the breeding system or something else entirely.
Until the full update is revealed, those details remain unknown, but dogs are currently one of the more interesting additions scheduled for Q4.
Rust Player Customization Is Planned For Q4 2026
Player customization could become one of the most noticeable remaining additions of the year.
June's Built Different update replaced Rust's old player models with an entirely rebuilt character system featuring new meshes, proportions, hairstyles, heads and animations.
When the update was released, Facepunch also explained that the new character system would allow the developers to work toward features that were difficult to implement using the older player models.
One of those features is a player customizer.
Facepunch has said it hopes to introduce player customization toward the end of 2026, although the exact way the system will work is still being decided.
Player customization now appears directly on the Q4 roadmap, making the June model overhaul much more than a simple graphical update. It also created the foundation needed to give players greater control over how their characters look.
What Is Rust Premium?
Rust Premium is another feature currently planned for Q4.
It should not be confused with Rust's existing Premium Access Pass system.
In June, Facepunch renamed its existing Premium server feature to Premium Access Pass. That system allows server owners to restrict access based on the value of a player's Rust Steam inventory.
The Rust Premium name is instead being reserved for a new monetization system planned for later in 2026.
Facepunch has said that Rust Premium is not intended to be a battle pass or a traditional VIP system. The current plan is closer to an optional monthly offering containing additional skins and perks, although the final details have not yet been revealed.
This is worth distinguishing from earlier discussions around a possible battlepass-style system, as Rust Premium currently appears to be taking a different form.
What Is The Rust Biofuel Generator?
The Biofuel Generator is also listed on the Q4 roadmap.
Facepunch has not yet revealed enough information to know exactly how the generator will work, what fuel it will consume or how much electricity it will produce.
It could provide another alternative for powering bases alongside solar panels, wind turbines and the Water Wheel, but its exact place within Rust's electricity system remains unclear.
More information should become available once Facepunch begins previewing the update in which the Biofuel Generator is scheduled to release.
What Is The Rust Bug Reward System?
Facepunch also plans to introduce a Bug Reward System.
The developers discussed the idea earlier in 2026 while talking about ways to improve the quality of bug reports and encourage more players to test upcoming content on the Staging branch.
Facepunch reviews bug reports submitted by players, and a reward system could provide another incentive for players to identify and report problems before updates reach the main game.
The exact rewards and requirements have not yet been announced, but the system remains listed on the Q4 roadmap.
Which Rust Features Are Planned For 2027?

Several highly anticipated Rust features are currently listed under 2027 rather than Q4 2026.
These include:
- Nexus System
- Server Transfer
- Deep Sea Nexus
- Improved Animal AI
- Procedural Caves
- Nomadic Dweller
- Improved Underground Trains
- Terrain Deformation
- Grappling Hook
- New Weapons
This is particularly important for anyone waiting for Nexus.
The Nexus System is currently grouped with Server Transfer and Deep Sea Nexus, suggesting that travelling between connected Rust servers remains part of Facepunch's longer-term plans.
However, players waiting specifically for Nexus should now be looking toward 2027 rather than expecting it during the remaining 2026 updates.
Procedural caves, terrain deformation and the Grappling Hook are also currently listed for 2027.
