Creating regular backups of your Enshrouded server is one of the best ways to protect your multiplayer world from lost progress, corrupted save files, or unexpected problems after an update. Whether you've spent hours building a massive base or exploring Embervale with friends, having a recent backup ensures you can recover your world if something goes wrong.

Fortunately, backing up and restoring an Enshrouded dedicated server is relatively straightforward. You can either manually copy your world files when self-hosting or manage backups directly through Pine Hosting's game panel.

This guide covers how to create and restore Enshrouded server backups using both methods.

How To Back Up A Self-Hosted Enshrouded Server

If you're hosting an Enshrouded dedicated server on your own computer or VPS, you can create a backup by copying your existing world files to a separate location.

Step 1: Stop Your Enshrouded Server

Before creating a backup, make sure everyone has disconnected from your server.

Close the Enshrouded dedicated server application and wait for it to shut down completely.

Backing up files while the server is actively writing save data could result in an incomplete or inconsistent backup.

Step 2: Locate Your Enshrouded Save Files

Navigate to the directory where your Enshrouded dedicated server is installed.

By default, Enshrouded stores its dedicated server world files inside the following folder:

savegame

For example, if your dedicated server is installed at C:\EnshroudedServer, your save location would typically be:

C:\EnshroudedServer\savegame

If you've changed your save location, open enshrouded_server.json and find the following setting:

"saveDirectory": "./savegame"

This determines where your server stores its world files.

Step 3: Create Your Enshrouded Backup

Once you've located your save files:

  1. Copy the entire savegame folder.
  2. Navigate to a separate location on your computer.
  3. Create a new folder for your backup.
  4. Paste the copied savegame folder inside.
  5. Copy your enshrouded_server.json configuration file into the backup folder as well.

We recommend naming your backup folder using the date it was created.

For example:

Enshrouded_Backup_2026-10-20

Ideally, store your backup on another drive or cloud storage service rather than keeping it inside your server installation directory.

This protects your files if you accidentally delete your server installation or experience a storage failure.

How To Restore A Self-Hosted Enshrouded Server Backup

If your Enshrouded world becomes corrupted, progress disappears, or you want to return to an earlier save, you can restore your backed-up files.

Step 1: Stop Your Dedicated Server

Make sure your Enshrouded server is completely stopped before restoring any files.

You should also create a separate copy of your current save files, even if you believe they're corrupted. This allows you to reverse the restoration if necessary.

Step 2: Locate Your Backup

Open the folder containing your previously saved Enshrouded backup.

Your backup should contain the savegame folder and, if you included it, your original enshrouded_server.json file.

Make sure you're selecting the correct backup, particularly if you have multiple copies from different dates.

Step 3: Restore Your World Files

Navigate back to your dedicated server installation directory.

Then:

  1. Rename your current savegame folder to something like savegame_old to preserve it.
  2. Copy the savegame folder from your backup.
  3. Paste it into your dedicated server installation directory.
  4. Confirm that the restored folder matches the location configured under saveDirectory.
  5. Restore your backed-up configuration file if you also need to recover your previous server settings.

Avoid changing the filenames inside your save folder, as this could prevent the server from recognizing your existing world.

Step 4: Restart Your Enshrouded Server

Once the files are restored, launch enshrouded_server.exe.

Wait for your server to finish starting, then connect and verify that your buildings, stored resources, and world progression have returned.

Remember that restoring an older world backup will also return that world to its previous state. Progress made after the backup was created will not be included.

Restoring world files also doesn't downgrade your game server version, which is worth remembering when recovering saves created before major updates.

For a consistent manual backup, stop your server after allowing players to disconnect.

Step 2: Create Your Backup

  1. Navigate to the Backups tab.
  2. Click Create Backup in the top-right corner.
  3. Enter a name for your backup.
  4. Leave the file exclusion fields empty if you want a full server backup.

You can also lock important backups to prevent them from being accidentally deleted.

Once completed, your backup will appear in the Backups tab, where it can be managed or restored later.

How To Restore An Enshrouded Server Backup With Pine Hosting

If something goes wrong with your world, restoring a previous backup takes only a few clicks.

Log into your game panel, select your Enshrouded server, and stop it through the Console tab.

Make sure your server is completely offline before continuing.

Step 2: Select Your Backup

  1. Open the Backups tab.
  2. Find the backup you want to restore.
  3. Click the three dots next to that backup.
  4. Select Restore.

A confirmation window will appear with the available restoration options.

Step 3: Restore Your Server Files

Before confirming, pay attention to the option labeled Delete all files before restoring backup.

Only enable this if you intend to replace the entire server installation and have confirmed that your backup contains everything you need.

If you created a partial backup or excluded files, leave this option disabled to avoid deleting files that aren't included in your backup.

Click Restore and wait for the process to complete.

Step 4: Start Your Server

Once the restoration finishes, return to the Console tab and start your Enshrouded server.

After the server comes online, connect to your world and verify that your previous progress has been restored correctly.

You won't need to manually upload world files or access your server through SFTP.

When Should You Back Up Your Enshrouded Server?

While you can create backups whenever you want, certain situations make them particularly important.

We recommend creating backups:

  • Daily before a server restart
  • Before installing major Enshrouded updates or patches.
  • When changing important server configuration settings.
  • Before uploading or replacing existing world files.
  • Before resetting your world or starting a new save.
  • When planning on making major changes to your multiplayer server.

For example, when updating an Enshrouded dedicated server, having a backup created before the update provides an additional layer of protection if unexpected problems occur.

Similarly, changes to your Enshrouded server settings are easier to reverse when you've preserved your original configuration.

For active multiplayer communities, keeping several backups from different dates is preferable to relying on a single restore point.
