With Hytale Chapter 1 arriving on October 12, 2026, players are wondering whether they need to reset their worlds to experience the new dungeons, Goblin Breaches, and combat features. Starting over is a big decision for established multiplayer communities.
The good news is that a fresh world isn't required just to play Chapter 1. Here's what to know before updating your Hytale server.
Can You Keep Your Existing Hytale World?
Yes. Hytale's developers have confirmed that existing WorldGen V1 worlds will remain playable rather than being deleted or automatically reset. V1 powered Exploration Mode at Early Access launch, and the developers intend to preserve those worlds.
Chapter 1 doesn't require you to delete your universe folder or wipe the world you've already built. Your saved structures and progress can remain in place while you try the new content.
Updates still carry risks. Always make a backup before loading an important world with a new server version.
How Does Chapter 1 Content Work In Existing Worlds?
Chapter 1 introduces progression connected to the Forgotten Temple. According to Hytale's official preview, visiting the temple sets the new storyline in motion, after which Goblin Breaches can appear as temporary world events.
A Breach opens a portal to an unstable fragment of Orbis. Players can enter, fight enemies, solve encounters, and collect rewards before the growing Void forces them out. These portal destinations regenerate between visits, without replacing your existing base.
If you're continuing an older save, start by exploring the Forgotten Temple and checking your world map for events. Also make sure World Events are enabled in the world's settings. The Update 7 pre-release introduced a World Events setting for Exploration worlds.
For details, see our Hytale Chapter 1 features guide.
Will Chapter 1 Change Your Existing Terrain?
It's important not to confuse Chapter 1 with WorldGen V2, Hytale's longer-term world-generation overhaul. Existing Early Access Exploration worlds use V1, while V2 is being developed for the game's eventual 1.0 release.
V1 worlds will remain accessible, although V1 won't generate new terrain indefinitely. This doesn't require a Chapter 1 reset.
As a general precaution, don't assume every new structure or terrain feature will appear inside areas you've already explored. Some world-generation changes may require visiting previously unexplored locations. Goblin Breaches are different because their portal destinations regenerate when entered.
When Is Starting A New World Worth It?
A fresh world can be worthwhile if your group wants to replay progression together, establish new building locations, or launch a seasonal multiplayer community where everyone starts on equal footing.
There's also a separate reason to begin again: Hardcore Mode. Hytale's Hardcore options, including Permadeath, Three Strikes, Nine Lives, and Soulbound, must be selected when a world is first created. If you want to switch an established normal world into one of those modes, starting a new world is the intended route.
But if you already have a thriving community with extensive builds, valuable inventories, and ongoing projects, keeping the current save is usually the more practical option. Ask your players first.
How To Back Up Your Hytale World Before Updating
Creating a backup is the most important preparation step. Update 7's pre-release notes mention that existing saves can upgrade their stored data the first time they're loaded, making a pre-update restore point especially useful.
On a self-hosted dedicated server, stop the server and copy your universe/ directory to a separate location. Include your config.json, permissions settings, and any mods or custom files you rely on.
With Pine Hosting, creating a backup is simpler:
- Log in to your Pine Hosting game panel.
- Select your Hytale server.
- Open the Backups tab.
- Click Create Backup and wait for it to finish.
- Lock the backup if you want to prevent scheduled backups from overwriting it.
Our Hytale server backup guide covers automated backups and restoring saves.
How To Update Your Existing Hytale Server
Once your backup is ready, update the server rather than generating a replacement world. On a self-hosted installation, download the latest compatible server files, preserve your existing save directory, and restart after the update completes.
With Pine Hosting, you can open the Console tab and click Restart. With automatic updates enabled, the panel applies the latest available server version during the restart. Your saved world remains in place; you don't need to use the Wipe World action.
For the full self-hosted procedure, follow our guide on how to update a Hytale server. If you use mods or plugins, check their compatibility before inviting everyone back.
What If Chapter 1 Content Doesn't Appear?
First, confirm that your game client and server are updated to compatible versions. Visit the Forgotten Temple to begin the chapter, and check whether World Events are enabled. Goblin Breaches are events, so don't expect a portal to be permanently visible at all times.
Check the console for errors and outdated plugins. Don't delete your existing world as a first troubleshooting step. Keeping a backup lets you test changes without risking months of progress.
