Valheim is finally leaving Early Access. Valheim 1.0 releases on September 9, 2026, completing the game’s planned progression with the long-awaited Deep North biome and bringing several new gameplay, building, crafting, and multiplayer additions.

For players running a Valheim server, the update is particularly important. Existing worlds can continue into 1.0, but the addition of the Deep North, wider world changes, new platforms, and potential mod compatibility problems mean server owners should know what to expect before updating.

Here is everything announced for Valheim 1.0 so far.

When Does Valheim 1.0 Release?

Valheim 1.0 releases on September 9, 2026.

The update marks the end of Valheim's Early Access period and will be available across:

  • Windows
  • Linux
  • macOS
  • Xbox One
  • Xbox Series X|S
  • PlayStation 5
  • Nintendo Switch 2

PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 join the existing platforms with the 1.0 release, with full crossplay supported between platforms.

Anyone who already owns Valheim will receive the 1.0 update without needing to purchase the game again. The price for new purchases will increase to $29.99 when 1.0 launches.

The Deep North Becomes Valheim's Final Biome

The biggest part of Valheim 1.0 is the completion of the Deep North.

Located at the northern edge of Valheim's procedurally generated world, this frozen region has existed for years but has remained largely unfinished. Version 1.0 transforms it into a complete endgame biome filled with snow, forests, abandoned structures, dangerous enemies, new resources, and additional progression.

Players should expect the Deep North to become more dangerous as they progress rather than immediately overwhelming them when they arrive.

New Enemies And Dungeons

Several new threats have already been shown.

One of the largest is the Gammeltroll, an enormous ancient troll capable of attacking players with huge pieces of the surrounding environment. Despite its size, the Gammeltroll is not considered a boss.

Players will also encounter Elakingar within the underground areas of the Deep North.

The biome introduces new dungeon content, including the Winding Tunnels, a network of narrow underground passages designed to make exploration considerably less predictable.

Other structures, mysterious characters, and areas have been teased, but much of the later Deep North progression remains deliberately hidden until launch.

New Deep North Weapons And Equipment

Reaching Valheim's final biome also means getting access to new endgame equipment.

Weapons shown so far include:

  • Nord axes
  • Greatswords
  • New bows
  • A large circular greatshield
  • The Frostfire crossbow

One of the most interesting additions, however, is not a weapon at all.

The New Grappling Hook

Valheim 1.0 introduces a grappling hook that can be attached to parts of the environment.

Players can reel themselves toward the grapple point or swing from it, opening new possibilities for climbing structures and navigating difficult terrain. Unlike many consumable traversal tools, the grappling hook has unlimited uses.

This could make exploration considerably different from previous Valheim biomes, particularly around the large structures found throughout the Deep North.

Ember Charges

Another new item is the Ember Charge.

These throwable explosives can destroy solid material and were demonstrated being used to break apart the remains of a defeated Gammeltroll.

Between explosives and the grappling hook, 1.0 appears to give players more ways to interact with the environment rather than relying entirely on traditional mining and movement.

Snow And Ice Become Gameplay Mechanics

The Deep North is not simply another biome covered in snow.

The environment itself affects how players move and build.

Slippery ice can cause Vikings to lose their footing, while areas containing deep snow may need to be cleared before they are suitable for building.

Fortunately, players will be able to craft a shovel specifically for clearing snow.

These mechanics could make choosing a location for a new Deep North settlement more important than simply finding a flat section of terrain.

New Food And Crafting

New resources also come with the frozen environment.

Lingonberries can be harvested in the Deep North and used in new recipes, including meatballs with lingonberries.

A new crafting structure called the Frost Foundry is also being introduced as part of Deep North progression.

Exactly how every new material, recipe, and crafting station fits together will become clearer once players can progress through the complete biome on September 9.

New Building Pieces

Builders are getting some significant additions with Valheim 1.0.

67-Degree Roof Pieces

New 67-degree roof pieces allow players to create much steeper structures than before.

The pieces are four meters high and will be available for both thatch and darkwood roof styles.

For players who spend most of their time building enormous halls, towers, villages, and castles on a Valheim server, this gives considerably more flexibility when designing taller structures.

Drawbridges

The long-requested drawbridge is also finally coming to Valheim.

Drawbridges should fit particularly well into fortified multiplayer bases, castles, moats, and larger community projects.

Achievements And Other 1.0 Improvements

Valheim 1.0 is more than the Deep North.

The full release introduces more than 50 achievements, along with new cinematic sequences covering the wider Valheim journey, including bosses and the game's finale.

Several technical improvements are also planned, including:

  • Faster world saving
  • Reduced microstutters when zones load and unload
  • Additional smaller optimizations throughout the game

These improvements are not expected to completely solve performance problems caused by extremely large builds, but they should improve several parts of the general experience.

There will also be some changes elsewhere in the world, although the Deep North remains the focus of the update.

What Does Valheim 1.0 Mean For Server Hosting?

Existing Valheim server worlds will continue working after 1.0 releases.

However, new terrain generation works properly only in areas that have not already been explored. If your group has extensively explored the Deep North before the update, starting a new world may provide the better 1.0 experience.

Server owners should also consider mods. Valheim does not officially support mods, and existing mods are not guaranteed to work immediately after such a major update.

Before September 9, it is worth:

  • Creating a backup of your existing world
  • Checking whether important mods have been updated
  • Avoiding unnecessary exploration of the Deep North
  • Deciding whether your community wants to continue or start fresh
  • Updating both the server and player clients before reconnecting

The maximum server size also remains unchanged, with Valheim continuing to support between one and ten players.
