Rust's Halloween event brings Candy Hunts, roaming scarecrows, creepy dungeons, and plenty of opportunities to get your hands on some seriously good loot. With the right strategy, you can even walk away with weapons like the M249 just by collecting candy.
The event is available on all Rust servers, and knowing a few tricks can make a huge difference. This guide covers how to win Candy Hunts, upgrade your loot, and take advantage of everything the Halloween event has to offer.
How Does The Rust Halloween Event Work?

The main attraction is the Candy Hunt, which starts approximately once every two in-game days.
When the event begins, glowing Halloween Candy spawns around players, and everyone has three minutes to collect as much as possible.
A leaderboard tracks how much candy each player has collected, with special rewards given to the top three players once the timer runs out.
Outside Candy Hunts, you'll also encounter roaming Scarecrows, Mummies, and mysterious portals leading to Halloween dungeons.
How To Upgrade Halloween Candy Into Better Loot
The candy you collect isn't just for the leaderboard. You can combine it into loot bags containing resources, weapons, and Halloween-exclusive items.
To upgrade your candy, open your inventory and click on the Halloween Candy. Once you have at least 10 pieces, an option to upgrade them will appear in the item's information panel. Click it to combine your candy into a Small Loot Bag.
You don't need a workbench or crafting materials.
There are three upgrade tiers:
- 10 Halloween Candy = 1 Small Loot Bag
- 10 Small Loot Bags = 1 Medium Loot Bag
- 10 Medium Loot Bags = 1 Large Loot Bag
To upgrade further, select the loot bags in your inventory and use the same upgrade option.
You can also open the bags immediately to receive random loot. Small bags contain basic resources and Halloween items, while Medium bags offer better tools and weapons. Large Loot Bags contain the best rewards, including weapons like the M249, LR-300, and MP5.
How To Get A Pumpkin Basket In Rust

Before trying to win a Candy Hunt, your first priority should be getting a Pumpkin Basket.
Collect 10 candies, upgrade them into a Small Loot Bag, and open it for a chance to receive a Pumpkin Basket. Keep repeating this until you get one.
The Pumpkin Basket lets you collect candy almost instantly by holding left-click instead of having to hold E on every piece.
This makes collecting candy significantly faster and is practically essential for competing against experienced players.
If you also find a Scarecrow Wrap, equip it for improved candy visibility.
Best Strategy To Win The Rust Halloween Candy Hunt
Here's a trick that can completely change how you approach Candy Hunts.

Whenever you collect candy, new pieces spawn in the direction your character is facing. You can use this to control where the candy appears instead of running around randomly.
Find a flat, open area and choose a spot in the middle. Start collecting candy around the outside, but make sure you're facing toward the center every time you pick something up.
Continue moving in a circle around that location, always looking toward the middle when collecting candy.
As you repeat this, more candy will begin spawning toward the center, allowing you to build up a large concentration in one area.
During the final 20–30 seconds, run toward the middle with your Pumpkin Basket and collect as much of the accumulated candy as possible.
This can give you a massive jump on the leaderboard right before the event ends.
Playing with teammates makes the strategy even better. Have everyone follow the same circular pattern while facing the same central location. Just remember that leaderboard scores are individual, so you'll still be competing for placement.
Rust Halloween Candy Hunt Leaderboard Rewards
The three players who collect the most candy receive additional rewards when the event finishes.
- 1st Place: 3 Medium Loot Bags
- 2nd Place: 1 Medium Loot Bag
- 3rd Place: 1 Small Loot Bag
These are the standard Rust PC rewards. You also keep the candy you've collected, regardless of where you finish.
Halloween Portals And Vampire Stakes

You'll occasionally find mysterious Halloween portals scattered around the map. Entering one takes you into a dungeon filled with hostile Scarecrows and Mummies.
These enemies can take quite a few hits with regular weapons, but there's a much easier way to deal with them.
Vampire Stakes are special wooden weapons that instantly kill Halloween undead enemies with a single successful hit.
They're especially useful inside these dungeons because you don't need to waste ammunition fighting every enemy.
Each stake is consumed when it delivers an instant kill, so bring several. You can find Vampire Stakes inside Small Loot Bags and as drops from Halloween enemies.
Killing undead enemies with a Vampire Stake also provides additional loot, making them even more worthwhile.

How To Make Frankenstein's Monster In Rust
Halloween enemies can also drop Frankenstein body parts, which you can use to create your own monster.
You'll need three parts: a head, torso, and legs. These come in Light, Medium, and Heavy variants, each offering different strengths.
Once you have all matching three, craft a Frankenstein Table, place the body parts inside, and awaken your monster.
Press P to open the pet controls, allowing you to command your monster to follow you, defend you, or attack enemies.

How To Customize The Halloween Event On Your Rust Server
Server owners can adjust certain Halloween settings, including the number of dungeon portals appearing around the map.
For example, the halloweendungeon.population console variable controls the population of Halloween portals.
On a self-hosted server, you can change this setting through the server console. With our Rust server hosting, you can access the same console through the Pine Hosting game panel without needing to connect to your server remotely.
Our Easy Config feature also lets you customize your Rust server through a simple interface. Easy Config makes it easy to change your server name, description, tags, AI settings, creative mode, and other general server options.
