How To Increase Inventory Space In Valheim 1.0: Wider & Deeper Pockets

Valheim players spent years working with the same limited inventory, but the 1.0 update finally introduced a permanent way to increase how many items your character can carry.

Two new upgrades called Wider Pockets and Deeper Pockets can add a total of 16 extra inventory slots, giving you considerably more room for resources, food, weapons and everything else you collect while exploring.

If you are starting a fresh world or progressing through a Valheim server, here is how the new inventory upgrades work, where to get them and what you need to unlock both.

How To Increase Your Inventory Size In Valheim

Valheim 1.0 adds two permanent inventory upgrades:

Each upgrade adds one complete row to your inventory.

Valheim normally gives you 32 inventory slots. Buying both pocket upgrades increases that to 48 slots, giving you 16 additional spaces in total.

That is a 50% increase in available inventory space.

Where To Get Wider Pockets In Valheim

Wider Pockets is the first inventory upgrade you can unlock.

You need to defeat Moder, the boss of the Mountains biome. Once Moder has been defeated, Wider Pockets becomes available from Haldor for 1,000 Coins.

Buying it permanently adds eight inventory slots to your character.

You do not need to equip the upgrade or sacrifice one of your existing inventory spaces. Once purchased, the additional row becomes part of your normal inventory.

Wider Pockets is particularly useful before entering the Plains, Mistlands and later biomes, where multiple foods, weapons, tools and resources can quickly fill the original inventory.

How To Get Deeper Pockets In Valheim

Deeper Pockets is the second inventory upgrade and requires more progression.

You first need to defeat The Queen in the Mistlands.

After The Queen has been defeated, return to Haldor and Deeper Pockets becomes available for 2,000 Coins. Purchasing it adds another row of eight inventory slots.

With both upgrades purchased, your inventory increases from 32 to 48 slots.

The two upgrades therefore cost 3,000 Coins in total.

Where To Find Haldor In Valheim

Both inventory upgrades are purchased from Haldor, the Dvergr trader found in the Black Forest.

Haldor can appear at several possible locations depending on your world seed. Once you travel close enough to one of his potential camps, his location becomes fixed and a bag icon appears on your map.

He normally appears some distance away from the starting area, so you may need to explore several Black Forest regions before finding him.

Once discovered, Haldor remains at the same camp.

If you are playing with friends, placing a portal near his location can save a considerable amount of travelling when you need to return later.

How To Get Coins For Inventory Upgrades

You need 3,000 Coins to purchase both inventory upgrades.

Coins can be found while exploring dungeons and opening chests, while some enemies can also drop them.

Haldor will also buy valuable items collected during your adventures, including:

• Amber
• Amber Pearls
• Rubies
• Silver Necklaces

Selling valuables you have accumulated from earlier biomes can be one of the easiest ways to afford the upgrades.

If you know you eventually want both pocket upgrades, saving Coins and valuables throughout your playthrough can prevent you from having to farm for them later.

Do Wider And Deeper Pockets Increase Carry Weight?

No.

The pocket upgrades increase the number of inventory slots available to your character, but they do not increase your maximum carrying weight.

This means you can carry a larger variety of items without running out of slots, but heavy materials such as ores and metals can still push your character above the normal weight limit.

For increasing carry weight, equipment such as Megingjord remains useful.

The pocket upgrades and Megingjord therefore solve two different problems. Wider and Deeper Pockets give you more inventory spaces, while Megingjord allows you to carry more weight.

Do Valheim Inventory Upgrades Carry Between Worlds?

The pocket upgrades are tied to your character rather than one specific world.

That means a character who has already purchased Wider Pockets or Deeper Pockets can keep the expanded inventory when travelling into another world.

The progression required to unlock the upgrades from Haldor, however, depends on the world you are playing in.

On a multiplayer server, boss progression is shared across the world. Once the required boss has been defeated, the relevant inventory upgrade becomes available from Haldor.

Each player still needs to purchase the upgrade for their own character.

Can You Increase Inventory Size Without Defeating The Bosses?

During normal progression, Wider Pockets and Deeper Pockets are intentionally locked behind Moder and The Queen.

There are developer commands that can alter certain character and inventory settings, but these are separate from the intended survival progression.

For a normal playthrough, defeating the bosses and purchasing the upgrades from Haldor is the intended way to increase your inventory size.

Players interested in completing Valheim's new achievements should also be careful when using developer commands, as they can affect achievement eligibility.

Are The Valheim Inventory Upgrades Worth Buying?

For most players, yes.

Inventory space has traditionally been one of Valheim's biggest limitations, particularly because food, weapons, tools, armour and gathered resources all compete for the same limited space.

Adding 16 extra slots makes longer exploration trips considerably easier and reduces the amount of inventory management required when gathering resources.

Wider Pockets is particularly valuable because it becomes available before some of Valheim's most inventory-heavy late-game biomes.
