Leather hides are a core progression material in Hytale, used to craft armor, tools, and survival gear. Whether you are playing solo or on a Hytale server or Hytale multiplayer server, knowing which animals drop which hides, and where to find them, makes gathering much more efficient.

This guide breaks everything down quickly, without overexplaining, so you can get back to exploring.

How Leather Hides Work In Hytale

Animals do not drop leather directly. Instead, they drop hides, which are processed into leather using a Tanning Rack.

Hide tiers:

  • Light Hide – early game
  • Medium Hide – mid game
  • Heavy Hide – late game

Only adult animals drop hides.

Check out our separate guide on Sturdy Chitin Leather, which is obtained differently and used for more advanced crafting paths.

Best Biomes For Farming Each Hide Type

Some biomes are far more efficient than others because they let you farm multiple hide tiers in one place. If you want the best return on time spent, focus on these:

Emerald Grove (Best Early–Mid Game Biome)

The Emerald Grove is the most efficient biome early on because it offers an equal ratio of all types of hide with relatively low danger.

You can farm:

  • Light Hide: Pig, Sheep, Jackalope
  • Medium Hide: Cow, Horse, Wolves
  • Heavy Hide: Grizzly Bear, Mosshorn

This biome is ideal for:

  • Early armor progression
  • Stockpiling hides safely
  • Preparing for harder biomes

Devastated Lands (Best Overall Hide Variety)

The Devastated Lands offer the highest variety of hide drops in the game, covering all three hide tiers in one region. The downside is increased difficulty and the fact that some mobs are only found deep underneath the surface.

You can farm:

  • Light Hide: Undead Pig
  • Medium Hide: Undead Cow, Rhino Toad, Magma Slug, Bleached Hound, Cave Raptor
  • Heavy Hide: Emberwulf, Trillodon, Cave Rex

This is the best biome for bulk farming once you are properly geared.

Howling Sands (Best Medium Hide Farming)

If your goal is Medium Hide specifically, Howling Sands is extremely efficient.

You can farm:

  • Medium Hide: Lion, Hyena, Sand Lizard
  • Heavy Hide: Crocodile

Enemy density is high, but travel is fast and spawns are consistent.

Whisperfrost Frontiers (Cold Biome Progression)

Whisperfrost Frontiers are more specialized but excellent for cold-region progression.

You can farm:

  • Medium Hide: Moose, Boar, Snow Leopard
  • Heavy Hide: Polar Bear

This biome is best tackled after Emerald Grove gear upgrades.

Convert Hides Into Leather

Place hides into a Tanning Rack to process them into the matching leather tier:

  • Light Hide → Light Leather
  • Medium Hide → Medium Leather
  • Heavy Hide → Heavy Leather

What Gear Each Leather Tier Is Used For

Leather is a required crafting component for multiple metal gear tiers in Hytale. As you progress, each hide tier supports stronger equipment.

Light Leather → Iron Gear

Light Leather is used when crafting Iron-tier gear, including:

  • Iron armor sets
  • Early-game weapons and tools

This tier supports your transition out of starter equipment and into reliable combat gear.

Medium Leather → Thorium Gear

Medium Leather is required for Thorium-tier gear, which includes:

  • Thorium armor sets
  • Stronger mid-game weapons

Most players will spend the longest time farming Medium Leather due to how widely Thorium gear is used.

Heavy Leather → Cobalt And Adamantite Gear

Heavy Leather is used in the crafting of Cobalt and Adamantite gear, which includes:

  • High-tier armor sets
  • Late-game weapons and tools

This leather tier is essential for surviving high-risk biomes and endgame encounters.

Play With Friends On A Hytale Server

If you want to do all of this with friends on a dedicated world, the easiest option is hosting a server. With Pine Hosting, you can start a Hytale server quickly and focus on hunting, crafting, and progressing together.
